Pisa and the Miracle Square
Pisa

Pisa_content

Pisa’s old religious center appears to the visitor as a typical town square. It was built just outside the city walls, along the northern border of the city, which was once on the banks of the Arno river.
As is evident by the inscriptions on the cathedral walls, Miracles Square was originally founded by Pisa’s own townspeople, following their victory over the Saracen army, during the Battle of Palermo in 1064.
The square is quite awesome and is rich in the influences of Arabic architecture. It testifies that Pisa was one of the most powerful Marine Republics in Italy during the Middle Ages.
Artistically speaking, it was the most outstanding city in Tuscany with stylistic choices that were totally avant-garde.
