Siena has been called the “Pompei of the Middleages”; the city has preserved its medieval urbanistic aspect, the battlements, the towerhouses, the paintings with the golden background. All this is noneother than the mood of the culture and the mentality that is still alive in the values of the people of Siena. Its traditions, one which is representing all of them is the Palio: it is the very breathe of the sienese year. It is the Palio that reinforces the social network, interrealionships, the customs, the parades, the greatings and also the mode of behaviour, to identify each other with a language which is never interrupted, part of which are the flags, the sound of the drums and the colors of the “Contrade”.
All this is involved in the public squares, in the buildings, in Piazza delCampo, in the Cathedral and in the 17 districts (contrade) that represent the network of Siena : S. Maria of the Scala, Palazzo Chigi Saracini, Palazzo Tolomei, The Monte dei Paschi di Siena, together with Duccio, Nicola Pisano, Donatello, Pinturicchio and Enea Silvio Piccolomini tell us about 13 century of history of the western world in the present tense.
